MUPD loses a fan

Aug. 26 4:00 p.m.

A Marshall University police officer reported to another officer that a fan purchased by the first officer was discovered broken. The officer stated he last operated the fan on Monday, Aug. 9 at approximately 11:59 a.m. The officer placed a note on the broken fan requesting information about the incident. As of Aug. 26, there had been no information received about who broke the fan or how the fan was broken.

Stop, stagger and roll

Aug. 28 3:05 a.m.

A Marshall University police officer observed a male staggering east in the parking lot next to the Campus Christian Center. The individual fell down and rolled off of a sidewalk. He was identified as Michael R. Mason. The officer reported Mason had red, glassy eyes, slurred speech and an odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath. Mason was issued a citation for underage drinking.

Vehicle struck

Aug. 27 3:03 p.m.

Two Marshall University police officers met a complainant on the west side of the Cam Henderson Center. The complainant stated someone had struck the vehicle he had parked in the Marshall University stadium parking lot. An officer observed damage to the passenger door and passenger side mirror. Police have no known suspects at this time.

No flushing

Aug. 26 3:07 p.m.

Complainant reported that 12 flush valves had been stolen from the south bathrooms in Hodges Hall on the first and second floors. Upon further investigation, two windows on the first floor on the south side of the building were left open. In addition, a fire exit door on the south wing was found to be open. There are no known suspects at this time.

Dude, where's our car?

Aug. 26 3:58 a.m.

A Marshall University police officer observed two males trying to open the doors on vehicles on the first floor of the parking garage on the 1800 block of Third Avenue. After stopping the individuals, the officer identified them as Andrew Skaggs and James T. Gooslin. The officer observed them to have red, glassy eyes, slurred speech and an odor of an alcoholic beverage about their breath. Skaggs and Gooslin were issued citations for underage drinking.

Locker theft no. 1

Aug. 24 3:45 p.m.

A complainant reported her property was taken from her locker at the Marshall University recreation center. The complainant stated she asked a female Recreation Center employee to assist her with one of the lockers. According to the complainant, the worker showed her how to use the locker, but also told two other girls to help the complainant. When the complainant returned from working out, she found her bag was missing from the locker. A woman who was observed to be texting at the time the complainant used the locker is considered a suspect.

Locker theft no. 2

Aug. 24 6:00 p.m.

A Marshall University police officer was notified that a student reported his property was stolen from a locker in the Marshall University Recreation Center. The complainant stated someone had taken items from his locker between 5:20 p.m. and 5:40 p.m. The complainant reported the locker must not have latched completely.

High times

Aug. 23 10:50 p.m.

A Huntington police officer and a Marshall University police officer observed two males smoking on the balcony at The Village apartment complex. On approach, the Marshall University police officer reported he smelled a strong odor of marijuana. The suspect was found to be in possession of a green, leafy substance that later tested positive for marijuana. The suspect was taken to the Marshall University Police Department. He was a juvenile. Under state law, police are not required to release the name of a juvenile unless the person has been charged as an adult.

Vehicle break-in

Aug. 22 7:38 a.m.

A complainant reported that a Jeep Grand Cherokee had been broken into on a Marshall University parking lot. A Marshall University police officer found that the right front passenger window had been broken. The glove box was open and empty. The owner of the vehicle was notified, but he reported that nothing was missing from the vehicle. There are no known suspects at this time.

Underage drinking sting

Aug. 21 9:00 p.m.

The Marshall University Police Department, the Cabell County Sheriff's Department and the Huntington Police Department conducted an underage drinking operation on the Marshall University campus and the city of Huntington. During the operation, 23 citations were issued for underage drinking.

DUI arrest

Aug. 21 2:43 a.m.

A Silver Malibu was observed turning off of Fourth Avenue and 16th Street at a high rate of speed. A Marshall University police officer reported the vehicle almost hit his police cruiser while he was in the far-east lane at the intersection. The driver was stopped and identified as Caitlin Roberts. The officer observed her to have red, glassy eyes and the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from her breath. Roberts failed three field sobriety tests administered by the officer. She was placed under arrest for first-offense DUI. The officer reported Roberts had three open containers in her vehicle.

Underage drinking citations

Aug. 20 3:21 a.m.

A Marshall University police officer observed a male and female walking east between Drinko Library and Old Main on campus. The female stumbled and fell to the ground. She was disoriented upon getting up. The individuals were identified as Michael F. Gravely and Kristen M. Smell. The officer observed Gravely and Smell to have red, glassy eyes, slurred speech and an odor of alcoholic beverage about their breath. The officer cited Gravely and Smell for underage drinking.
