Parking dilemma

Recreation Center users cannot get free parking

As summer heats up, most people are eager to get back into swimsuit shape. Marshall Recreation Center houses several weight machines, exercise classes and personal trainers that can help you do just that. There's one catch, though. Where do you park your vehicle while you're exercising?

Several students have been complaining lately that the price of parking is too high and that the administration should consider free parking for students using the recreation center. The meter parking lots and parking permit spaces are the only available options.

The employees at Marshall Recreation Center say the parking problem hasn't affected memberships or attendance at the gym.

"We're busier than last summer," said Joe Troubetaris. He went on to say that youth camps have been using their facilities all summer and the turf is often rented as well. "Rates have actually gone down," Troubetaris said.

The Recreation Center staff agreed that the people who come in to the gym regularly don't have complaints about parking issues.

For now, students will still need to purchase a parking permit or use the meter lots while exercising at Marshall's facilities. Temporary parking permits can be acquired at the Office of Parking and Transportation.
