The Golden Rule states: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” From what has been decided in court, some people have forgotten this rule.
In 2005, a former Marshall female cheerleader claimed she was sexually harassed. In 2009 a civil lawsuit court ruled in her favor. While she won $25,000, this settlement has done little to lessen the trauma she has faced through this entire ordeal.
Actions that occurred, to an unwilling participant nonetheless, should not be condoned especially on a university sponsored team, squad, club or activity. The university should have taken action when the accusations were originally made.
Another sad point, according to court documents, was the adviser of the squad knew about all the inappropriate actions. She continued to change when exactly she first learned about it.
These events give not only the cheerleading squad, but Marshall University a bad name.
Marshall should be ashamed this ordeal and should be thankful that nothing more than a slap on the wrist was its’ punishment. But higher administration should be more aware of these issues.
Finally, we should not judge those remaining on the cheerleading squad based on the actions of others, because many of them are innocent. It may be difficult but remember: a few bad apples does not spoil the bunch.
