There is a reality for many Americans that we do not see on a daily basis. It isn’t that we don’t have a chance to see it, but we choose not to look or think about things that make us feel bad.
There is a constant discussion in politics about social welfare programs vs. charity. Many conservatives do not support government assistance towards those that have run low on their luck or been a victim of terrible circumstances. Many will say it isn’t the government’s job to help in need. Conservatives will say it certainly isn’t right for the government to force us to pay higher taxes to help others. That is our hard earned money going to other people!
The picture many conservatives would like to paint in our mind is a lazy minority doing drugs and popping out another kid to get a bigger welfare check.
All of us have heard a conservative say that minorities are the biggest recipients of welfare, although that simply isn’t true at all. Of course a person who is on drugs and too lazy to work shouldn’t get a welfare check, right?
The above statement is an extreme picture painted by the everyday conservative who doesn’t support welfare programs. Race has nothing to do with it at all. This person is not down on their luck due to anyone other than themselves. Why should we have to spend our money paying taxes to support them?
The children will die. If this person is so terrible to cheat his or her government and lie about doing drugs all day, do you believe they care about their kids? I would make the assumption that they don’t. Without food stamps the children of this story would go hungry through no fault of their own, but instead it would be the fault of the lazy parent.
Most people on welfare programs are only dependent on the program for a short while. They rise up relatively quickly and regain their statuses as contributors to the social order of things. This means they pay taxes to help others who are in need. There is no proof to show that any large amount of the American population sits around all day taking advantage of the social welfare programs our government has put in place to save those in need from starvation.
The reality is we spend Trillions, yes with a capital “T” on military budgets, wars, and technology to murder, but some complain about the Billions, yes with a capital “B” that we spend to try to save people from death at home when they are down on their luck.
I have said it before and I will say it again. I pay taxes. I am willing to give money to the government to help my fellow man. If your argument is that your taxes are too high, well so are mine. If I am willing to help, what does that say about me? If some aren’t, what does that say about them?
