Stress, exhaustion taking its toll

You know those really, really bad days you have sometimes? It’s the type of day where you wake up late, drop your umbrella and your keys, don’t have time for coffee or food, have a million things to do, can’t find any socks, run into an ex, have to work and then have to stay up late because of all the homework weighing down your life, and you feel like you are either going to cry or scream — or both.
Multiply all that awfulness by five and that’s my week. This has literally been the worst week of my college life, and I am convinced there is a curse on the days of Oct. 12 through 16. Nothing good has ever come into my life in the month of October.
Something crazy, bad or stressful always happens. Maybe it’s Halloween. Maybe its the ever-approaching cold weather. Maybe it’s the cloudy skies we’ve had this week. I don’t know. But I don’t like it.
I’m sure many of you know what I mean, because this is midterm time, which means everyone is on edge and could snap at any moment. Could it be that everyone is so stressed out that the universe feels it and is punishing us? I don’t believe in all that, but hey, after the week I’ve had, I’ll just about believe anything.
And on top of everything, I haven’t slept, even though I wrote the editorial Wednesday about the dangers of sleep deprivation. Hyprocrite, much?
A very wise professor told me during a cry-fest in his office Tuesday that even though I think I can do it all, I can’t. There is no way I can please everyone and do everything I think I need to do. I have to prioritize and chill out. He told me I might even have to compromise some things for others. (Gasp!) School can be so awful sometimes with professors pulling you in all different directions, plus everything else in your life you need to take care of — bills, family, work, errands, friends — just adds to the madness. It can wear us down.
So my advice to you, and myself, is to pace yourself. Some things can wait, others can’t, and some things in your life, like your health and friends and family, are way more important than some silly paper you might be stressing out about right now.
I know I can get through it, because I have made it this far. So can you. Sometimes, it’s just nice to have a little encouragement. It’s nice to feel like you have some support in all this.
