Something real has changed these people

FIRESIDE OBSERVATIONS

We've been having some difficult and trying times lately in my family. One of my cousins recently had a child out of wedlock and things have just slid downhill from there. As the scene has gotten more intense, we've seen the local police come and arrest her for the threats, her being admitted to a mental health rehabilitation program and moving in with another family member to try and help.

But as time has progressed, her reactions have gotten stranger. Her pupils dilate. Her voice changes suddenly to a man's voice and then normal again. Her cries for help, screaming tantrums and self-inflicted physical abuse all point to something unworldly. And though I haven't encountered it, it sounds like something you'd see in a demon possession film or some other occult classic. And to be honest, I've been highly skeptical that she could be demon possessed, especially with the stories of her slithering on the ground like a snake across the room.

But what has convinced me that it's a real possibility is the reaction of my family who has been around her. People who have never really shown an interest in prayer or church issues, I see suddenly changing. After  encountering her, they're going to church and seeking prayer. I see my grandpa calling local pastors for advice when modern medicine has no advice, no diagnosis and a verdict of normal.

It's incredible and quite shocking. Please pray for my cousin and the rest of my family as they go through this trying time.

All of this has made me consider what I believe as a Christian and the supernatural beliefs it entails. We now see the establishment of Christianity as one of the largest religions in the world. But it wasn't always so. It was a supernatural occurrence itself. The founders of the church, the first apostles, went from scared fisherman, most with little education, to these great founders who traveled the globe preaching a message of redemption they were willing to and did die for. How does a transformation like that happen? Obviously, I couldn't tell you from first-hand experience of being there, but I know something must have occurred to change them  in a span of a few weeks.

How do I know? Because people don't just change like that out of the blue. Some real experience has to grip their lives. My family has shown me that. So in closing, I ask you to consider that lot of people who peacefully turned the world upside down. What was it that gripped them?

First of all, what a horrible breech of privacy to publish such private things about a family member in a newspaper. I seriously doubt that Christ would approve.

Secondly, if your description of her behavior is accurate, then that poor young woman is most likely suffering from a severe psychological problem--possibly schizophrenia--and from your description she is not receiving adequate treatment for her condition, given that "modern medicine has no advice, no diagnosis and a verdict of normal."

Prayer is passive. Someone needs to be active. Think of it as God working through you, and help your cousin get a second, or third, or fourth opinion, until your family finds a better psychiatrist.

She may be suffering from the mental abuse of her delusional religious family. How do you think they reacted to her having a child out of wedlock? That probably didn't go over well with their "traditional family values". I wouldn't be surprised if they thought the child was demon spawn or something along those lines. Only religious people could act this irrationally. Too many Americans think this way and its extremely dangerous. Religion is partly responsible for the intellectual regression happening around us. If I was thinking about attending this university or becoming a faculty member, I would definitely think again.

i find it pathetic that commentaries like this in our news paper are contributing to making appalachians look backwards, redneck and uneducated. and this is coming from a college student! please! there is so much going on in the world that we could be spending our time thinking about. you know, like how global climate change is threatening the very basis of modern societies. how people in africa are starving and dying of AIDS. american politics. mountaintop removal. feminism. why, why?!, would a professor have allowed this into the paper...

Seeing as she just had a baby, has no one considered that she has postpartum psychosis? It's a very real disorder. I can't believe that anyone in this day and age is actually considering demon possession as a cause of someone's problems.

Ummm......well, then.

As someone who has been on the other side of an "exorcism," I can tell you that it is nothing at all to do with any kind of reality you're currently in touch with. There were things that happened that I cannot explain, and other things that I most assuredly can. Part of it was purely me BSing to try to get out of being responsible for things I had done. Some of it...well, as I said, I can't explain it all. There were things that happened that were not me, that I had no control over. It took me a long time to finally own up and move past it all, and it put my family through hell for about 5 years. I regret the whole thing and have distanced myself from anything related as much as possible.

Truth be told, your cousin needs help. Real, psychological help. Not some BS found in church pulpits or in the underground of Christian societies. Talk to her. I don't mean talk AT her or TOWARDS her, I mean talk to her. LISTEN to her and what she has to say. Encourage her to open up. It's distinctly possible that she's just not being listened to (as was my situation) and needs people to understand that she's not crazy. Be there for her and be supportive of her getting help.

I'll tell you, though. I don't think this is an appropriate forum to dish about family issues. This is your cousin you're talking about and I'm pretty sure if she were aware of your airing her dirty laundry about that she would not be accommodating. Whatever you believe, whatever you think you know...you're managing to push it onto others in a most rude and obsequious manner. It's being pushed onto your cousin through her family and it's being pushed onto us, your readers, as you are openly using your columnist status as a pulpit. With the former, I hope your cousin gets help and gets away from people pushing their belief systems upon her. With the latter...there ought to be balance across the board. Those of other faiths and religions should also get the chance to air their views in the same manner as yours. You can't push forth one at the expense of the rest, even if you believe yours to be the "correct" one.

After all....Jesus didn't say to be a d*ck. Jesus said to love. So act in love and keep this kind of crap to yourself until your cousin gets it sorted out.
