Inspired: Look for a real church experience

I am so done with G-rated church. Who’s with me?

I attended a women’s conference this weekend in the adorable, southern twang-filled town of Lake City, Tenn., and I heard a whole lot of things that probably would have made your mama blush.

These women weren’t the quiet and sweet, soft-spoken and proper “church ladies” you may imagine when you hear the words. No, no. These were hilarious, bold, confident, beautiful women who truly had something revolutionary to say about the Christian church.

They weren’t careful to be politically correct. Someone said the word “suck” (gasp). Several people talked about sex (gasp, gasp). We might have even jumped up and down a couple of times (gasp, gasp, gasp)!

But you know what? It was real. I know many of you are probably having visions of a bunch of out-of-control, holy-roller women going crazy, and I’m not really opposed to that to tell you the truth, but I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about a generation of people that is finally getting over themselves and getting real.

None of us have lived perfect lives. None of us. And the truth of the matter is that we as Christians should want God to flood every single part of our lives, even the “taboo” parts of our past and present.

If we can’t be open and honest about things in church— in a realm where we should be able to trust the people around us, where we should be able to share our issues to help those that have similar problems — then people are going to continue avoiding God and looking for fulfillment everywhere else.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself this weekend, and folks, that’s exactly how it should be. Church, God, Christianity should be FUN! Why do we keep talking about “the joy of the Lord” if we don’t believe it exists?

John 15:10-12 says this: “If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”

John 17:13 says “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.”

This time of year is an especially great opportunity to have some fun and laugh a little.

We’re getting ready to enter the Christmas season so let’s spread some joy to the world. Let’s get excited.  Let’s get real with people.

My name is Morgan and I’m not perfect, but you know what? God loves me unconditionally anyway, regardless of the stupid things I too often do. He’s still there waiting for me to finish screwing up so that I can come to my senses and ask for forgiveness. And that, my friends, makes me pretty darn happy.

Let’s get glad people! We have a lot to smile about.
