The Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine announced the new associate dean for graduate medical education.
Dr. Paulette Wehner, program director of the adult cardiovascular medical training program at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, will serve as the newly appointed associate dean for graduate medical education.
She said she is happy with her new position.
“I was honored and a little overwhelmed,” Wehner said. “It was an appointed promotion. It was more like a request.”
According to the press release issued by the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, the position of associate dean for graduate medical education will require Wehner to coordinate and oversee the residency and fellowship programs in cardiology, endocrinology, family medicine, internal medicine, medicine/pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, orthopedic surgery, pediatrics, pulmonary medicine and surgery.
Dr. Charles H. McKown Jr., vice president of health sciences at Marshall University and dean of the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, said in deciding how to fulfill the position, they were debating whether to do a national search or take someone within the medical school faculty.
“If we considered the latter, by far the best choice would be Paulette Wehner,” McKown said. “The feeling in general was we weren’t likely to get that combination from outside.”
Wehner said she has a lot of plans for her new position and hopes to bring everyone together for the common good.
“I want to attempt to organize all the training programs more underneath one roof,” Wehner said. “I want it to have a more cohesive approach to residency training within Marshall University.”
McKown said the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine is very fortunate Wehner has agreed to take this position.
“She was an excellent student here, is an excellent physician, an excellent cardiologist, a good administrator and a good educator,” McKown said. “She is extremely confident and professional.”
McKown said it is fulfilling and rewarding to work with her.
“We are so proud of her,” he said. “She is perfectly suited for this job. She is well prepared.”
