The Marshall Catholic Newman Center had its first monthly event called Truth Tuesday Coffee House on Tuesday.
Traci Ferguson, director of Campus and Community Outreach, organized the event. The topic this week was Judaism.
Ferguson said the goal of the meeting is to have a casual conversation over coffee as opposed to a lecture type environment.
Ben Egan, freshman theater major from Greenbank, W.Va., said he attends a lot of the events at the Newman Center.
"I practically live here," Egan said.
Egan said he went to an event at the Newman Center earlier that day and heard about the Truth Tuesday Coffee House from Ferguson and decided to stay for it.
He said he definitely would attend these events if they become a monthly thing.
"I once went to a Catholic program that did this sort of thing, and it was interesting," Egan said.
Sam Skelley, junior math major from Hurricane, W.Va., said this is her first time attending an event at the Newman Center.
"I came because my friends are speaking tonight," Skelley said.
Skelley said she likes the Newman Center because it's smaller. She said she is able to live somewhere in Huntington and it's within walking distance.
She said she is not Jewish but is interested in the religion, and she planned to learn more about the faith at the event.
"I probably will come to more of these in the future," Skelley said. "I want to learn more about different things to look into.
"I don't have a specified religion, so I'm always open to learn new views and see if one matches up with what I believe."
About 10 people attended the Truth Tuesday Coffee House.
Coffee, hot chocolate, hot tea and cookies were offered at the event, Ferguson said. They would like to receive some input from the students who attend to figure out what they would like to explore for a faith format. She said they will use that as kind of a blueprint of where to go next.
She said they are hoping to receive donations from different organizations in the future but haven't determined that yet.
