The college of science is starting off the fall semester with a new look and lounge for everyone to enjoy.

The science building, located on campus next to Harris Hall and Buskirk Field, used indirect cost-recovery money to refurbish the hallways with new furniture and technology over the summer.

"We want people coming in and feeling like this is an exciting place to be," said Charles Somerville, dean of the college of science.

New additions to the building include two Samsung flat-screen TV's, cushioned desks with Internet access and electric outlets and multiple-table seating.

Somerville said another new addition will be a touch-screen television, allowing students to access Marshall's website, a roster of professors and a map of the building.

The other television will be dedicated mainly to science students, showing information about science-related activities, exams, alumni and a directory.

Other additions to the building are wireless Internet, new floor tiling and new painted walls, Wayne Elmore, associate dean of science, said.

"Technology is constantly being incorporated into the sciences," said Katherine Bush, junior from Charleston, W.Va. "The addition of the BBSC and updates to the science building are necessary to keep up with current equipment and teaching methods."

The renovation cost is estimated to be $60,000 for the tiling in the hallways, moving of the showcases, painting and other changes. There is an estimated cost of $4,000 for both flat-screen TV's.

The renovation of the building is still in progress and is estimated to be finished in the next few years.
